What is the recommended age range for the kids’ program?
Typically, the age range is for our program is 6-14. For younger children more developed in maturation/listening/behavioral skills, we allow ages starting at 5. In addition, tweens and teens exhibiting appropriate levels of development in skill and maturity will be permitted to participate in the adult fundamentals class as well.
How intense is the activity level?
The technique block with drilling ranges from mild to moderate levels of intensity depending on how much energy you elect to put into the drilling. When starting out (and when learning a brand new technique you have never done before - regardless of level and experience), it is recommended that you move at a slower and more methodical pace in order to fully grasp the movements of a skill. Live training can range from moderate to high levels of intensity depending on you, your partner and experience level. If you need rest in between rounds, take a break before you train with a new partner.
Should I get in shape before I start?
There is a common myth that one should be at a higher level of fitness/ conditioning in order to start. This is not true. There is no better time than NOW to start. People easily talk themselves out of the unknown. Get started, take it at your pace, develop a routine and you will inevitably progress in all ways…to include your fitness level. You will get support from everyone around you. You WILL need to make sure you are properly hydrated in preparation for classes regardless of the time of year. Dehydration will hamper anyone at any fitness level.
Am I required to ‘spar’?
There is no requirement to participate in live training. If you prefer to continue drilling the techniques of the day or previous techniques that you have learned in class, find a partner and work on these skills during the live training block.
Is Jiu Jitsu dangerous to train?
Jiu Jitsu falls into the category of combat sports and inherently comes with some risk of injury. However, focus on fundamentals, communication with your training partner, refraining from erratic movements (“spazzing”) and our culture of safety oriented training, significantly mitigates risk of injury. Warm up, take care of/listen to your body, move with awareness and tap early/often to help keep injuries from interrupting your training.
Do I need any special gear or equipment to train?
In addition to a gi, belt, grappling shorts/rashguard (for no gi), it is recommended that you wear a mouth guard but it is not required. Some male members elect to wear an athletic supporter (“cup”). Team Jiu Jitsu GIs, shorts and rash guards are available for sale at the academy. White belts are also for sale. Every other belt you will earn and be provided to you by the academy upon promotion. Additionally, many of our female members elect to wear leggings or ‘bike style’ fitness shorts for no gi training.
How often should I train?
As often as possible is the easiest answer. To be more specific, 1-2 times a week minimum (especially for newer students). 3-4+ times a week is recommended for those who have their sights on a faster pace of learning and development. The biggest factor is CONSISTENCY. Consistent training over a long term will always overcome high frequency for just a short/temporary term. Those who thrive are those who are persistent and consistent. Prepare yourself mentally and physically for a marathon. We are in this together for the long game. Jiu Jitsu is a lifetime study.
